HONG KONG – Hong Kong logged total 13,721 coronavirus infections on Tuesday, as 37 more COVID patients passed away, the city’s health authorities reported.

The new cases comprised 12,930 local cases and 791 imported infections, the Centre for Health Protection said in a statement. The 37 deaths brought the city’s toll during the fifth wave to 10,808.

It said 520 of the imported infections were detected at the Hong Kong International Airport, 209 during days 1 to 3 of their arrival in Hong Kong, and the remaining 62 from the forth to seventh days.

As of Tuesday, Public Health Laboratory Services Branch had identified 226 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, seven of BA.4.6, 13 of BF.7 and 38 of BQ.1.1 among imported cases in Hong Kong, according to the CHP.

In added that 131 cases of sub-lineage XBB, 18 of XBD, one of BA.2.75.2, six of BF.7 and 145 of BQ.1.1 were also detected among local cases.

The center also said that 58.08 percent of new cases verified from Dec 3 to 9 were linked to the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants.

As of Monday, total 3,738 COVID patients were being treated at public hospitals, including 442 new admissions, the Hospital Authority (HA) said in a separate statement, adding that 2,585 required oxygen therapy while 37 needed ventilator support.

The HA also said that 93 COVID patients were in serious condition and another 93 in critical condition, including 28 receiving intensive care.
