Five Hong Kong universities have been listed among the top 100 in the World University Rankings 2023 – the best performance by the city’s universities since the evaluation system was compiled in 2010.

Beijing’s Tsinghua University is the highest-ranked university in Asia, according to the rankings released on Wednesday.

The annual assessment of global universities was published by the United Kingdom-based educational publication, Times Higher Education.

The City University of Hong Kong made the biggest advance, rising from 151st last year to 99th this year. It’s also the first time CityU has entered the world’s top 100 since 2010.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong rose four spots to 45th this year, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology climbed from 66th to 58th.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which first took its place among the top 100 universities in last year’s rankings, jumped from 91st to 79th.

Other mainland universities on the list include Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China and Nanjing University.

The World University Rankings 2023 covers 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions, with 13 indicators in the fields of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
