HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Observatory raised Strong Wind Signal No 3 on Tuesday due to a tropical depression moving over northern part of the South China Sea.

The HKO said the tropical depression was estimated at 11 pm to be about 140 kilometers south of Hong Kong and was forecast to move east slowly, across the coastal waters of Guangdong.

"According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression is expected to depart gradually from Hong Kong. Members of the public are reminded to note the latest weather bulletin before departing tomorrow morning," the HKO said in a weather bulletin issued at 10:45 pm Tuesday.

It said the rainbands of the tropical depression will bring occasional showers and squalls to Hong Kong in the next few days and there will also be swells.

The Observatory raised Signal No 3 at 4:25 pm, which meant that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour were expected in the territory.

With the Signal No 3 in force, classes in kindergartens, schools for children with physical or mental disability were suspended, the Education Bureau said in a statement.

However, these schools should keep their premises open and implement contingency measures to look after arriving students while ensuring that conditions are safe before allowing students to go home, it added.
