HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said there has been no radiation leak or impact on the environment at Taishan Nuclear Power Station in Guangdong province.
The Security Bureau issued the statement after reports of a suspected radiation leak at the station. In the statement, a spokesman said the bureau has liaised with relevant ministries and commissions on the mainland on Monday and Tuesday and learned from the National Nuclear Safety Administration that the nuclear station is in a safe condition.

Radiation monitoring results from the Hong Kong Observatory showed the environmental radiation levels in Hong Kong have remained normal over the past year, a spokesman for the Security Bureau said
Taishan Nuclear Power Joint Venture, which owned the project, also confirmed that the radiation indicators at the station and in its surroundings are normal, the spokesman said.
The HKSAR government has maintained close contact with the Nuclear Emergency Committee Office of Guangdong province, and relevant notification mechanisms on information exchange during emergencies have been established, the spokesman said.
From the begging of 2021, the HKSAR government has so far received two notifications regarding events at Taishan station which happened on Feb 21 and April 5, respectively.
“Both events were Level 0 deviations and did not affect the safe operation of the unit, the health of the workers, the communities in the vicinity or the environment,” the spokesman said.
The current situation at Taishan station does not trigger the relevant notification mechanisms, the spokesman added.
Events without safety significance are rated as level zero on a scale of 1-7 of the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale jointly developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The spokesman also said that radiation monitoring results from the Hong Kong Observatory showed the environmental radiation levels in Hong Kong have remained normal over the past year.
