Seven people, including media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, were found guilty on Thursday for their roles in an illegal assembly in 2019.

The other six defendants were Democratic Party founder Martin Lee Chu-ming, Labour Party Vice-chairman Lee Cheuk-yan, barrister Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee, and former legislators Albert Ho Chun-yan, Leung Kwok-hung and Ho Sau-lan.

Former lawmaker Au Nok-hin pleaded guilty to organizing and participating in the same unauthorized gathering during a Feb 16 trial and activist Leung Yiu-chung pleaded guilty to one charge of joining the assembly.

On Aug 18, 2019, the defendants ignored the police’s objection to their public procession application and urged many people to con-gregate at Victoria Park in the city’s Causeway Bay district. During the assembly, they carried a long banner out of the park and led other participants to march to Central.

Sentencing in the cases was set for April 16 at the District Court in Wan Chai.
