HONG KONG – John Lee Ka-chiu said on Tuesday he will submit on Wednesday his application to stand for next month’s chief executive race.

John Lee said he will continue to talk to committee members in the following days and arrange thematic discussions in a bid to come up with a well-rounded and thorough election platform that is in line with the actual situation on the ground

As of 6 pm on Tuesday, Lee had garnered 700 nominations from the city’s 1,500-member Election Committee, well beyond the 188 nominations needed to be eligible for the vote. A candidate also needs at least 15 nominators from each of the five sectors in the committee

During a meeting with media representatives on Tuesday evening after a crammed day of lobbying activities, Lee thanked the nominators, saying their nominations are a great boost for him.

Lee said he will continue to talk to committee members in the following days and arrange thematic discussions in a bid to come up with a well-rounded and thorough election platform that is in line with the actual situation on the ground.

He officially threw his hat in the ring on Saturday, vowing to take on the historic mission to “start a new chapter for Hong Kong together” by enhancing the city’s competitiveness, solving deep-rooted issues with result-oriented manner, and creating a solid foundation for the city’s development.

The nomination period in the chief executive race ends on Saturday. Candidates will need to submit their applications in person before 5 pm on Thursday, as Friday and Saturday are holidays.
