Ocean Park Hong Kong launched a metaverse game on Thursday that enables members of the public to care for giant pandas in a virtual world.

Players can act as animal caretaker ambassador of the park and apply various virtual tools to care for giant pandas and learn more about their daily habits

The game was designed to commemorate An An, a beloved giant panda at the park who died on July 21. Presented to Hong Kong by the central government in 1999, An An died at the age of 35, when he was the world’s oldest male giant panda under human care.

The augmented-reality game was co-developed by the park and local tech startup AiR World Ltd. Players can act as animal caretaker ambassador of the park and apply various virtual tools to care for giant pandas and learn more about their daily habits.

They can also use the game to learn about An An’s life and Ocean Park’s efforts in animal conservation.

People can also interact in the game with another giant panda, Ying Ying, by scanning the QR code at her residence in the park. Ying Ying and Le Le, the only two giant pandas at the park, were gifted by the central government in 2007.
