HONG KONG – Sixty-seven percent of residents support chief executive hopeful John Lee Ka-chiu to become the next leader of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, while 72 percent endorsed his election manifesto, according to an opinion poll released on Wednesday. 

The poll, which interviewed over 1,000 people via telephone calls, was conducted by the Hong Kong Research Association from April 29 to May 3.

Results showed that Lee’s proposal to allow residents waiting for public rental housing to move in before the supporting infrastructure is ready won the approval of 74 percent of respondents

Results showed that Lee’s proposal to allow residents waiting for public rental housing to move in before the supporting infrastructure is ready won the approval of 74 percent of respondents, the highest for any of his manifesto pledges. 

This was followed by his emphasis on enhancing governance with 71 percent, and a plan to solve intergenerational poverty and the proposal to establish a department to coordinate the planning and development for the Northern Metropolis with 70 percent respectively.

The survey also found that 31 percent of respondents believe that “land and housing” is the most critical issue for the next government to address, followed by “social harmony” (16 percent) and “government governance” (13 percent).
