HONG KONG – Eight students who sat this year’s Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination obtained the highest score of 5** for all seven subjects, according to local media reports.

Among the five boys and three girls, four of them also attained full marks in an additional mathematics paper. The “super-achievers” are students of Carmel Secondary School and Pui Ching Middle School in Homantin area, Queen Elizabeth School in Mong Kok, as well as Heep Yunn School in Kowloon City.

The remaining four elite students are from La Salle College in Homantin, Diocesan Girls' School in Jordan, as well as King's College and Queen's College on the Hong Kong Island, respectively. 

Some 50,000 students sat the exam this year, 4 percent fewer than 2021.

A total of 3,218 candidates with special educational needs were provided with special examination arrangements in written examinations. Over 770 special examination centers were set up for them.

According to the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, 42 percent of day school students have met the entrance requirements for local universities – the same percentage as last year. These 17,336 students obtained level 3 or above in both Chinese Language and English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies.

For the third consecutive year, the HKDSE was conducted under the pandemic. This year’s exam was curtailed to three weeks instead of the usual four.

A series of precautionary measures were implemented in around 520 halls and about 400 classrooms that were used as examination centers.

For the first time, candidates infected with COVID-19 and considered as close contacts were also allowed to sit the HKDSE at a special exam center in Penny’s Bay.
