BEIJING – A Chinese mainland spokesperson Wednesday warned Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that any attempt to undermine prosperity and stability in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is futile.

Anyone damaging China's sovereignty, security and development interests will swallow the bitter fruit of his acts, said Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, in a stern warning to the DPP.

The DPP has repeatedly leveled unwarranted criticism against a decision on improving the electoral system of the HKSAR by the country's top legislature, Zhu said, adding that the legislative move will put an end to collusion between separatist elements advocating "Taiwan independence" and those seeking "Hong Kong independence."
