BEIJING – China's State Council has decided to remove John Lee Ka-chiu from the post of chief secretary for administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.

The decision, made on Thursday, was in accordance with the HKSAR Basic Law, and based on the suggestion of HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

Lee, 64, tendered his resignation on Wednesday and announced his intention to run for the upcoming Hong Kong chief executive election scheduled for May 8.

He said it has been a glory for him to serve the people of Hong Kong for more than 40 years, and he will inform the public of his next move once his resignation has been approved by the central government.
