HONG KONG – Hong Kong police said on Sunday they had charged three people in connection with the murder of 28-year-old model Abby Choi whose legs were found in a refrigerator in a house on the city's outskirts.

While her former father-in-law and former brother-in-law from her first marriage were charged with murder on Sunday, Choi's former mother-in-law has been charged with perverting the course of justice. 

Additionally, police arrested a 47-year-old woman in Tsim Sha Tsui on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of assisting the suspects and is being detained for further enquiries.

Local broadcaster TVB, citing police, said Choi's ex-husband Alex Kwong was arrested on Saturday. 

Choi’s former husband was arrested at Tung Chung Pier while waiting for a speedboat to escape the city, according to police. He was found carrying a large amount of cash and several luxury watches.

Those charged are set to appear in Kowloon City Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The fifth suspect arrested Sunday is believed to be the lover of Choi’s former father-in-law and helped Choi’s former husband hide in a rented flat in Tsim Sha Tsui.

After Choi’s first marriage ended in divorce, she remarried in 2016 the son of the founder of TamJai Yunnan Mixian, a popular chain restaurant in Hong Kong.

The gruesome murder of local influencer Choi, who recently appeared on the digital cover of L'Officiel Monaco fashion magazine, is believed by police to have been committed over a dispute over money with her former parents-in-law over a luxury flat.

Choi disappeared on Tuesday and was last seen in the Tai Po district, where her remains were found, police said.

Police were looking for parts of Choi's body, after the discovery on Friday. They also found a meat slicer and an electric saw at the scene in the rural Tai Po district, according to a police statement.
